Mega Man Voice Actor Ben Diskin Won't Return For Dual Override Over Union Contract Dispute
Ben Diskin, who voiced Mega Man in 2018's Mega Man 11, has announced he will not reprise his role in the upcoming Mega Man: Dual Override. The voice actor cited Capcom's refusal to offer a SAG-AFTRA union contract as the reason for his departure, despite being invited to return for the highly anticipated sequel.
The voice of Mega Man is changing for the franchise's next installment. Ben Diskin, who brought the Blue Bomber to life in Mega Man 11, announced on March 10, 2026, that he will not be returning to voice the iconic character in Mega Man: Dual Override due to Capcom's refusal to provide a union contract for the project.
"With a broken Blue Bomber heart, I am no longer the voice of Mega Man," Diskin wrote in a post on Bluesky. "I was asked to return for Mega Man: Dual Override, but only on the condition I work without the protections of a union contract."
The announcement comes as a significant development for the highly anticipated sequel, which was revealed at the 2025 Game Awards and is scheduled to launch in 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC. The game marks a major return for Capcom's legendary franchise after years between mainline entries.
According to Diskin's statement, Capcom did offer certain assurances regarding artificial intelligence protections. The company reportedly provided "full A.I. protections" and assured him that his voice would "never" be used for A.I.-generated content. However, Diskin indicated that these promises alone were insufficient without the backing of a SAG-AFTRA contract.
"The video game industry is facing record layoffs and huge amounts of uncertainty. I need a union contract to feel safe," Diskin explained in his post. He added that he even offered to work at a lower rate if the project could proceed under SAG-AFTRA guidelines, but claimed he was told "with certainty, from [Capcom], that the project will not go union."
The actor's concern centers on the enforceability of contract provisions without union backing. While Capcom insists that AI protections are already part of the proposed contract, Diskin may not have adequate means to enforce those provisions without SAG-AFTRA's support and legal resources.
The issue reflects broader tensions in the video game industry regarding AI usage and worker protections. Video game developers have increasingly adopted generative AI tools to create art, code, and voice lines for their games. This trend has raised significant concerns among voice actors about their likenesses being used without consent or being pressured into signing contracts that require such consent.
These concerns led to substantial labor action in the industry. SAG-AFTRA members went on strike for nearly a year, from July 2024 to June 2025, before a new agreement was ratified. According to SAG-AFTRA representatives, the new agreement provides "guardrails and gains around A.I., including consent and disclosure requirements for A.I. digital replica use and the ability for performers to suspend consent for the generation of new material during a strike."
Capcom has not yet publicly responded to Diskin's announcement or provided comment on the contract dispute. Game Informer confirmed it reached out to the company but had not received a response at the time of reporting.
Diskin's departure means that Mega Man: Dual Override will feature a new voice for the titular character, marking a change from the 2018 iteration. Mega Man 11, released in October 2018, was itself a return to form for the franchise after a lengthy gap in mainline entries, and Diskin's portrayal of the character was part of that revival.
The situation highlights the ongoing challenges facing voice actors in the gaming industry as they navigate concerns about job security, AI technology, and union protections. As Mega Man: Dual Override continues development ahead of its 2027 release, fans will be hearing a different voice bring the Blue Bomber to life on screen.
