Call of Duty Warzone Introduces Black Ops Royale Mode, A Nostalgic Return to Blackout-Style Battle Royale
Treyarch and Activision have announced Black Ops Royale, a new permanent game mode for Call of Duty: Warzone that draws heavy inspiration from Black Ops 4's Blackout battle royale experience. Launching March 13, the mode eliminates loadouts and buy stations in favor of ground loot, while reintroducing fan-favorite mechanics like the wingsuit and grappling hook on the new Avalon map.
Call of Duty: Warzone is getting a major shakeup with the introduction of Black Ops Royale, a new battle royale mode that pays homage to the franchise's first foray into the genre. Developed by Treyarch and Activision, the mode launches on March 13, 2026, as part of Black Ops 7's Season 2 Reloaded update and will be a permanent addition to Warzone.
Black Ops Royale represents a significant departure from traditional Warzone gameplay by drawing inspiration from Blackout, the battle royale mode that debuted in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 in 2018. The new mode aims to capture the pacing, traversal, and combat feel of that original experience while modernizing it for today's player base.
The mode features 100 players divided into 25 squads of four, all competing on Avalon, a massive Mediterranean-themed map that previously appeared in Black Ops 7's campaign and Endgame PvE mode. For its battle royale debut, Treyarch has extensively modified the map to better suit competitive gameplay, reducing water prevalence by adding exposed sandbars and new land connections between islands. These changes eliminate the red fog present in Endgame and create more streamlined player movement throughout the environment.
One of the most dramatic changes from standard Warzone is the complete removal of loadouts, buy stations, and in-game cash. Players wingsuit into Avalon with nothing and must scavenge the map for all their equipment. This return to pure looting mechanics represents a fundamental shift in how matches unfold, forcing players to adapt to whatever gear they find rather than relying on pre-made weapon configurations.
Weapons in Black Ops Royale feature a color-coded rarity system ranging up to Legendary quality, with each gun having fixed archetypes that determine its attachment configuration and tactical role. Players can upgrade weapons by finding attachment kits scattered across the map, progressively unlocking their preset builds. The archetype system focuses weapons on specific combat scenarios, such as close-quarters engagements or long-range firefights.
Equipment and traversal mechanics draw heavily from Blackout's playbook. The wingsuit returns for both initial deployment and redeployment scenarios, allowing players to glide across Avalon's expansive terrain. The iconic grappling hook makes a comeback as ground loot, enabling quick vertical movement and rapid rotations. Other Blackout-inspired gear includes sensor darts, trauma kits, and a tiered armor vest system that mirrors the original mode's defensive mechanics.
The perk system has also been reimagined. Rather than fixed loadout slots, players now have five consumable boosts that can be swapped on the fly, providing temporary advantages that can be activated strategically during critical moments. This flexibility allows for more dynamic decision-making during matches.
Avalon features optional activities and objectives beyond simply eliminating rival squads. Players can hunt bounties, crack strongboxes, capture relays, and fight through guild defenses. Particularly challenging are the Cradle Breach activities—contaminated zones where players face AI enemies including robots and hallucinated zombies, with some encounters featuring boss fights against enemies like Manglers. Successfully completing these high-risk objectives rewards squads with tier 3 armor and high-rarity loot.
Black Ops Royale is fully integrated into both Black Ops 7 and Warzone progression systems, with exclusive daily and weekly challenges that count toward overall player advancement. The mode will evolve over time with map changes, new weapons, and additional content updates.
The Gulag, a Warzone staple, is notably absent from Black Ops Royale. Instead, players can return to the fight through redeploy tokens and other methods found during matches. The HUD closely follows Warzone's existing interface but adds information displays for enemy health, weapon rarity and archetype, attachment upgrade paths, and more.
Black Ops Royale goes live at 11 PM CT on March 12 (midnight EST on March 13). Players anticipating further Season 2 Reloaded details for Black Ops 7 can expect an additional blog post on March 4.
